BLACK POWDER HUNTS

crisp autumn mornings, puff of black powder in the air, the
nostalgia of days long past. If this excites you we have the hunt
for you. Black powder licenses are are among one of the most coveted
tags available in Colorado. The combination of rutting bulls
and the exhilaration of hunting with primitive weapons makes for a
great hunt. This is a high success hunt, in not only harvesting
animals but, one the leaves memories that will last a lifetime. Due
to the limit availability of licenses it take years of planning to
obtain a license. The reward still greatly exceeds the time it takes
to obtain a license.

All of our guided black powder hunts are wilderness pack-in. There
is no better way to
experience
a black powder hunt than by
horseback
deep in the wilderness. These hunts take place in Mid-September
right in the middle of the rut. Each morning you leave camp well
before day light by horseback and travel to secluded basins where we
are frequently
greeted by bugling bulls. "This is unquestionably one of those hunts
where you can look at several bulls before pulling the trigger". The
country is demanding and the days are long, this is absolutely a
hunt that you need to prepare for. Guided hunts are 2 on 1 unless
otherwise stated, I usually do a large share of guiding on these
hunts myself. You will feast on our renowned home cooked
meals, and as with all of our hunts nothing is spared for your
complete comfort and satisfaction. Our guided hunts take place in a
limited license unit so the black powder tags are drawn it a
separate drawing from the state wide licenses. This makes the tags
even harder to get. Right now it takes a minimum of 8
preference points to draw. Black powder hunts are 8 days with a days
travel time on each end of the hunt.

This is a great combination
elk and mule deer hunt. There are also a lot of color phase black
bears, and a private lake full of rainbow and brook trout. Our ranch
also adjoins a large tract of the Uncompahgre National Forest with
the only access through private land. It also adjoins a state
wildlife area. This ranch offers a great hunting opportunity seldom
found today. This hunt has produced several quality animals over the
years, and
it just seems to get better each year. You will stay in a nicely
equipped cabin. We developed this hunt as a hybrid of a guided hunt
and a drop camp. You are provided with lodging, 2 home cooked meals,
plus a sack lunch each day, riding horses, tree stands and a guide
in camp to show you the ranch. This hunt allows you the freedom of a
drop camp, to hunt on your own without all the cooking and camp
chores. All you have to do is concentrate on bagging that big bull.
You are outfitted with everything you need to have a successful
hunt. If you like the challenge of elk hunting on your own with all
the extras of a full service hunt, this is the one for you. These
are great elk hunts for the veteran bowhunter and novice alike.
